Mexico 1820-Zs AG 8 reales
This specimen was lot 1573 in Sedwick sale 12 (Winter Park, FL, October 2012), where it sold for $102.66. The catalog description[1] noted, "Zacatecas, Mexico, bust 8 reales, Ferdinand VII, 1820AG. Lightly toned XF+ with underlying luster, slightly crude rims (as made)." Alarmed by the outbreak of the war of independence, local officials opened a mint in Zacatecas so that silver ore would not have to be transported over bandit infested mountain trails. This bust type was struck 1813-22 and is rare in nice condition as most were poorly made. By 1818, techniques had improved to the point where reasonably well struck specimens are available. Assayers AG (1814-20) and RG (1820-22) are both recorded for the date.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW, this specimen 25.6 grams.
