This specimen was lot 3248 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $747.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "1820 JJ 1/2 escudo. Mexico City mint. AU-55 (NGC). Types as above. Lustrous medium gold with some highlights on both sides. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942." The type was struck 1814-20 and is not particularly rare but the 1820 is a scarce date and the type is hard to find in nice condition. This is the first half escudo struck in Mexico.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.69 g, 0.875 fine gold, .047 troy oz AGW. This specimen: 1.68 grams, 15.00 mm diameter.
