This specimen was of lot 24419 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $2,761.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1820-JJ, AU55 NGC, very attractive with light old-time toning and considerable mint luster. The strike is bold with no planchet problems. Struck toward the end of Spanish colonial rule in Mexico." This type was struck in Mexico City 1814-21 in the last years of colonial rule. It is considerably scarcer than the preceding imaginary bust type issued 1808-12. This date is awarded no premium, perhaps because few collect this type by date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16496, KM 161, Fr-52.
