Heritage sale 3049, lot 31179
Mexico H3049-31179r.jpg

This specimen was lot 31179 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $2,350. The catalog description[1] noted, "Durango. War of Independence - Ferdinand VII 8 Reales 1820 D-CG MS62 NGC, Durango mint. Notable as the only Mint-State example certified by NGC, this specimen delivers an exceptional strike that leaves the laureate bust of Ferdinand VII and the reverse pillar motif fully raised and completely sharp. The overall surfaces are lightly toned to a steel color, and original luster glints from behind. While the edge of the planchet has a small, inconsequential flaw, the eye is neither disturbed nor concerned by it. An absolutely outstanding selection struck at the Durango mint, sure to garner much attention in this current market." The Durango mint was opened in 1812 by the royalists during the Mexican war of independence and operated until 1895. It struck eight reales with the portrait of Ferdinand VII 1812-22; this date is not rare but seldom seen in this condition. Many are very crude.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.903 fine silver, .786 troy oz ASW.
