Guatemala 1820-NG M 8 reales
This specimen was lot 109 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 220 euro (about US$349 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"1820. Guatemala. M. 8 reales. Acuñación algo floja. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Escasa así. EBC. (eight reales of 1820, Guatemala mint. Slightly weak strike, handsome, lustrous, scarce thus, extremely fine.)"
This type, called the "standard" or "proper" bust, was struck in Guatemala 1811-21. There are Guatemala eight reales with the proper bust of Ferdinand dated 1808 but these are very likely backdated. This type is much more common than those of Charles IV. Assayer M is recorded for 1786-1823.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
