Spain 1820M 8 escudos rev Heritage 3019-25594.jpg

This specimen was lot 25594 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $2,070. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1820/9 Madrid-GJ, AU55 NGC. Well struck with essentially full mint luster and only light rubbing on the highpoints keeping this attractive 8 Escudos from the Mint State category." This type was struck 1814-20 and like all Spanish eight escudos as distinct from Spanish colonial eight escudos, is very rare. It is the last eight escudos struck in Spain. Cayón notes many varieties for this date as to the dots (or lack thereof) around the assayer's initials and AUSPICE.

Recorded mintage: unknown but the most common eight escudos from Madrid.

Specification: 27.07 g, .875 fine gold, .762 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16490, Fr-311, KM 485.
