Áureo y Calicó sale 347, lot 403

This specimen was lot 403 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €5,700 (about US$7,522 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1819. Fernando VII. Madrid. GJ. 8 escudos. Acuñación algo floja. Bella. Brillo original. Muy rara. Sólo hemos tenido 4 ejemplares. EBC/EBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VII, eight escudos of 1819, Madrid mint. Weakly struck, handsome, original luster, very rare, we know of only four examples. Extremely fine or better.)"

Spain was never a significant producer of eight escudos, a denomination produced in large quantities by the Latin American mints. This type was struck at Madrid 1814-20.
