This specimen was lot 21560 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $1,495. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1819-JJ, XF40 NGC, a very nice type example with strong details and luster in the legends. From the Don Benito Collection of Hispanic Gold." This type was struck in Mexico City 1814-21 in the last years of colonial rule. It is considerably scarcer than the preceding imaginary bust type issued 1808-12. This date is awarded no premium, perhaps because few collect this type by date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold, .760 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16486, KM 161, Fr-52.
