Mexico 1819-Mo JJ 1/2 escudo
The first specimen was lot 31368 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $1,116.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "Ferdinand VII gold 1/2 Escudo 1819 Mo-JJ AU55 NGC, Mexico City mint. Well preserved with scant wear on the higher points and strong underlying luster, covered by thick old patina. Scarce in this attractive quality. From The Rudman Collection of Mexican Coins." The second specimen was lot 388 in Áureo y Calicó sale 347 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,452 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"1819. Fernando VII. México. JJ. 1/2 escudo. Bella. Brillo original. Rara y más así. EBC+. (kingdom of Spain, Ferdinand VII, half escudo of 1819, Mexico mint. Handsome, original luster, rare in this quality, choice extremely fine.)"
This type was struck 1814-21 and is usually seen in VF-EF or lower. Jewelry damage is common.
