Mexico 1819 2 reales rev DSLR.jpg

The first specimen was lot 280 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 222 € (about US$345 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Fernando VII (1808-1833). 1819. México. JJ. 2 reales. (Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, two reales of 1816, Mexico City mint.)."

This specimen is one of a series minted 1812-21 in Mexico City during the reign of Ferdinand VII. It uses the "standard bust" of Ferdinand. The mounting anarchy unleashed during the War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, such as Zacatecas, Guanajuato and Durango. The date is common with an 1819/8 overdate listed. Assayer JJ is recorded for 1812-21. The Mexico City mint, opened in 1538, is still in operation.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 6.77 g, 0.896 fine silver, .196 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-15551, KM 93.
