Guatemala 1819-NG M 2 reales
The first specimen was lot 276 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 320 € (about US$497 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Fernando VII (1808-1833). 1819. Guatemala. M. 2 reales. Bella. Pleno brillo original. Rara así. S/C. (Ferdinand VII, 1808-33, two reales of 1819, Guatemala mint. Handsome, fully lustrous, uncirculated)."
This specimen is an example of a type struck in Guatemala 1808 and 1811-21. In 1776, an earthquake demolished Antigua Guatemala (including the mint) and a new city was built some miles away. To mark the move, the mintmark was changed to "NG" ("Nueva Guatemala", still the capital of Guatemala) on all issues of 1777 and after. Assayer "M" is noted for the years 1785-1821. Harris[2] notes that this type is as common as the contemporary Mexico City issue, a statement not confirmed by the author's experience, tho this type is much more available than preceding types.
