Guatemala 1819-NG M real
This specimen is an example of a type struck in Guatemala 1808 and 1811-21. It was lot 8473 in Ponteri sale 153 (Baltimore, March 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description noted, "Well struck with full laurel leaves in hair, sideburn and button on drapery. Lustrous. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED." In 1776, an earthquake demolished Antigua Guatemala (including the mint) and a new city was built some miles away. To mark the move, the mintmark was changed to "NG" ("Nueva Guatemala", still the capital of Guatemala) on all issues of 1777 and after. Assayer "M" is noted for the years 1785-1821. This type is much more available than preceding types, with the 1820 and 1821 dates being quite common.
