Spain H3082-34786r.jpg

This specimen was lot 34786 in Heritage sale 3082 (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $1,683.60. The catalog description[1] noted, "Spain: Ferdinand VII gold 8 Escudos 1816/5 M-GJ AU Details (Cleaned) PCGS, Madrid mint. Seemingly only cleaned on the more matte-appearing obverse, with brilliant gold luster cascading over the sharply struck reverse. The first of this date we have offered of the type, and interestingly so, as an overdate." By 1816, Napoleon was defeated and exiled to St. Helena to fabricate his legend. Ferdinand was reinstalled in Madrid and began taking condign revenge on his opponents, real and imagined. Rebellion and anarchy surged the length of Latin America. This type was struck 1814-20 and like all Spanish eight escudos as distinct from Spanish colonial eight escudos, is very rare. It is the last eight escudos struck in Spain.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.875 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16452 (overdate), KM 485, Cal-30.
