Aureo sale 238, lot 232

This specimen was lot 232 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, Spain, November 2011), where it sold for 240 euro (about US$381 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1816. Madrid. GJ. 8 reales. Buen ejemplar. Escasa así. EBC. (Spain, Eight reales of 1816, Madrid mint. Nice example, scarce thus, extremely fine.)"

By 1816, Napoleon was defeated and exiled to St. Helena to fabricate his legend. Ferdinand was reinstalled in Madrid and began taking condign revenge on his opponents, real and imagined. Rebellion and anarchy surged the length of Latin America. This standard bust of Ferdinand was used at Madrid 1814-30.
