Aureo sale 238, lot 104

This specimen was lot 104 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1816. Guatemala. M. 8 reales. Bonito color. Escasa. MBC/MBC+. (eight reales of 1816, Guatemala mint. Nice color, scarce, very fine.)"

This type, called the "standard" or "proper" bust, was struck in Guatemala 1811-21. There are Guatemala eight reales with the proper bust of Ferdinand dated 1808 but these are very likely backdated. This type is much more common than those of Charles IV. Assayer M is recorded for 1786-1823.
