Aureo sale 238, lot 502

This specimen was lot 502 in Aureo & Calicó sale 238 (Barcelona, November 2011), where it sold for 1,200 euro (about US$1,903 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"1816. Santiago. FJ. 8 reales. Pátina. Brillo original. Rara y más así. EBC-/EBC. (eight reales of 1816, Santiago mint. Toned, original luster, rare, about extremely fine.)"

The standard bust of Ferdinand was first introduced at the Santiago mint for 1812. The assayer FJ appears for 1803-17. The final year, 1817, is very rare.

Recorded mintage: 386,000.

Specification: 27.07 grams, 0.896 fine silver, .780 troy oz ASW.
