This specimen was lot 32163 in Heritage sale 3041 (Chicago, August 2015), where it sold for $3,172.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Chile, Ferdinand VII gold 4 Escudos 1816 So-FJ XF40 NGC, Santiago mint. A wholesome coin, with even wear on the higher points and free of distracting surface marks. Possibly the rarest date - with a reported mintage of 100 pieces - of this elusive type, no dates of which were represented in the Eliasberg collection. Rare in any grade and most collectible in this unflawed quality." The specimen was one of a series struck 1810-17 during the reign of Ferdinand VII. It bears his name and the bust of Charles IV, who abdicated in 1808. The bust of Ferdinand appears on the eight reales and the two reales but not on any gold. The SCWC notes that this type was restruck after independence but it remains rare.

Recorded mintage: 100.

Specification: 13.53 g, 0.875 fine gold, .380 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Cayón-16336, KM 77.
