This specimen was lot 22769 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Real, 1820-JJ. NGC MS-64. Sharply struck with lovely iridescent toning." This specimen is from a type was struck in Mexico City 1814-21, superseding the imaginary bust of Ferdinand VII used 1809-14. The 1821 is the only really common date. A few Iturbide one reales were struck in 1822 but the republican cap-and-ray type did not commence until 1825. It is possible more 1821's were struck in later years.
