This specimen was lot 1266 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. War of Independence. Guanajuato. 2 Reales, 1821-GoJM. EXTREMELY RARE. An elusive and very underrated coin with reportedly only around 3 examples known to exist. A wholesome and collectible problem free example. Moderate even wear from circulation. Toned. Purchased privately from Mike Dunigan." This specimen is one of a series minted 1821-22 in Guanajuato during the Iturbide's regime. Altho it uses a local version of the "standard bust" of Ferdinand, none were struck by the royalists. The mounting anarchy unleashed during the War of Independence forced the royal authorities to open branch mints, of which Guanajuato was one of the more prolific. The SCWC prices the type over double the standard Mexico City issue. Assayer JM is recorded for 1821-22 but not on any coins struck for the Republic. The Guanajuato mint remained open after independence, striking coins for the Republic of Mexico until 1900.
