Hannover 1717-HCB thaler Dav-2078
This specimen was lot 72421 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $552. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Calenberg-Hanover. Taler, 1717-HCB. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg Ludwig (George I of Great Britain). PCGS EF-45 Gold Shield. A pleasingly toned and lightly handled example of this type featuring King George I of Great Britain, who was still serving as the Elector of Hanover even though he was then living abroad in England. A minor natural planchet flaw is noted near the edge, though it is not at all distracting." This type of 1715-17 is rather scarce and the lucky bidder obtained a bargain. George Ludwig was promoted to king of England on the death of his cousin Anne Stuart in 1714. This is the period when the electorate ceased to be known as Brunswick-Luneburg and called Hannover instead.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
