Hannover 1716-HCB 2/3 thaler
The first specimen was lot 677 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €180 (about US$243 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, HERZOGTUM Georg I. Ludwig, als Georg I. König von Großbritannien, 1714-1727. 2/3 Taler 1716, Clausthal. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön. (Germany, electorate of Brunswick-Luneburg, George Louis as George I, king of Great Britain, 1714-27, two-thirds thaler of 1716, Clausthal mint. Handsome patina, very fine.)"
The second specimen was lot 5192 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €480 (about US$620 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, AB 1692 KURFÜRSTENTUM HANNOVER, als Georg I. König von Großbritannien, 1714-1727. 2/3 Taler 1716, Clausthal. Feine Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (electorate of Hannover, George I, king of Great Britain, 1714-27, two-thirds thaler of 1716, Clausthal mint. Fine patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"
The two-thirds thaler or gulden was minted extensively in Hannover in several concurrent types. For 1716, "leaping stallion" gulden (KM 112.1) and "bust" gulden (shown here) exist, of which this is the scarcer.
