Künker sale 354, lot 5694

This specimen was lot 5694 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €2,400 (about US$3,340 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, - als Georg I. König von Großbritannien, 1714-1727. Reichstaler 1716, Zellerfeld. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Herrliche Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 77, Osnabrück 2002, Nr. 2178. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, as George I, king of Great Britain, 1714-27, thaler of 1716, Zellerfeld mint. Very scarce in this quality, superb patina, extremey fine to uncirculated.)"

In addition to various "St. Andrew", "leaping stallion" and "bust" thalers, George I also issued "wild man" thalers with two different obverses, both common. On this one, the combined arms of England, France, Ireland and Hannover are shown within the Order of the Garter; on Dav-2077, the four shields are arrayed in a cross with a starburst in the center. This type was struck 1716-27. St. Andrew thalers, wild man thalers and bust thalers were also struck at this time.
