Stack's Bowers 2021 ANA sale, lot 40342
SB821-40342r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40342 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $3,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneberg-Calenberg-Hannover. Taler, 1718-HCB. Clausthal Mint. Georg I. NGC MS-63+. A sharply struck example, this Taler displays surfaces that possess significant gleam and almost no signs of handling. Soft gray color in the centers, with some delicate iridescent tones that appear near the edges, helps to impart a strong element of original character." George Ludwig was promoted to king of England on the death of his cousin Anne Stuart in 1714. This is the period when the electorate ceased to be known as Brunswick-Luneburg and called Hannover instead. This type, struck 1718 only, is very similar to Dav-2078 of 1715-17 and Dav-2081 of 1719-27.

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2080; KM-101.2.
