Stack's Bowers September 2025 Collectors Choice sale, lot 74722

This specimen was lot 74722 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2025), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Navarre. Ecu, 1718-N. Montpellier Mint. Louis XV. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details. From the Richard August Collection." This is an écu de France-Navarre of the Montpellier mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. This is a common date altho a few 1718-N écus vertugadin also exist. The specimen is a "flan neuf;" unlike the écu vertugadin, none were struck over older coins. The type was struck 1718-20 in substantial numbers.

Recorded mintage: 902,404, a common date, plus 18,281 of the écu vertugadin[2].

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, .722 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
