Künker sale 264, lot 3083

This specimen was lot 3083 in Künker sale 264 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,359 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"KÖNIGREICH Louis XV, 1715-1774. Louis d'or à la croix du Saint-Esprit 1718, N, Montpellier. GOLD. Min. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the cross of the Holy Spirit of 1718, Montpellier mint. Small planchet flaws, extremely fine.)"

Droulers[2] notes this French type, called a louis d'or à la croix du Saint Esprit, was struck 1718-19 and replaced the louis d'or de Noailles, which was 12.23 grams.

Recorded mintage: 212,504 plus 40,966 of the louis d'or de Noailles[2].

Specification: 9.79 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 22-23 mm diameter, this specimen 9.77 g.
