France 1718-S ecu Dav-1327

Jean Elsen sale 127, lot 1375

Shown here is an écu de France-Navarre of the Reims mint, which closed in 1773. Droulers[1] notes the 1718-S as fairly available but not as common as the type coin, 1718-A. The type was struck 1718-20 in substantial numbers but is not so common as the preceding écu vertugadin. This specimen was lot 1375 in Jean Elsen sale 127 (Brussels, December 2015), where it sold for €290 (about US$372 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR écu de Navarre, 1718S, Reims. D/ B. enfantin à d., l., dr. et cuir. R/ Ecu écartelé de France-Navarre, échancré et couronné. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, écu of Navarre of 1718, Rheims mint. Obverse: armored and draped infant bust to right; reverse: crowned quartered arms of France and Navarre. Very fine.)"

Recorded mintage: unknown but not rare plus some écus vertugadin.

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, .722 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
