Künker sale 294, lot 3035

This specimen was lot 3035 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,500 (about US$3,370 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANKREICH, KÖNIGREICH, Louis XV, 1715-1774. Louis d'or à la croix du Saint-Esprit 1718, A, Paris. GOLD. Prachtexemplar. Min. poröser Schrötling, fast Stempelglanz. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, louis d'or of the cross of the Holy Spirit, Paris mint. Proof example, some laminations, about uncirculated.)"

Droulers[2] notes this French type, called a louis d'or à la croix du Saint Esprit, was struck 1718-19 and replaced the louis d'or de Noailles, which was 12.23 grams.

Recorded mintage: 963,600 plus more of the louis d'or de Noailles[2].

Specification: 9.79 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 22-23 mm diameter, this specimen 9.80 g.
