Jean Elsen sale 159, lot 1221

This specimen was lot 1221 in Jean Elsen sale 159 (Brussels, June 2024), where it sold for €160 (about US$206 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"FRANCE, Royaume, Louis XV (1715-1774), AR écu de Navarre, 1718 W, Lille. D/ B. enfantin à d., l., dr. et cuir. R/ Ecu écartelé de France-Navarre, échancré et couronné. Traces d'ajustage. Très Beau. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, silver écu of Navarre of 1718, Lille mint. Obverse: laureate, draped and armored infant bust right; reverse: crowned and quartered arms of France and Navarre. Adjustment marks, very fine.)"

This type was struck 1718-20 in substantial numbers but is not so common as the preceding écu vertugadin. Both this écu de Navarre (KM 435.22/Dav-1327) and the écu vertugadin (KM 414.21/Dav-1326) were struck at Lille in 1718.

Recorded mintage: est. 818,640[2] plus 2,306,460 of the écu vertugadin in rf.
