Goldberg sale 128, lot 1260
G128-1260r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1260 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $2,340. The catalog description[1] noted, "France. Double Louis d'or de Noailles, 1718-A (Paris). Incorrect denomination on slab. Louis XV. Crowned young head left. Reverse: Crowned arms of France and Navarre in cruciform with fleur-de-lis at angles. Adjustment marks on both sides. Scarce three year type. Lustrous. PCGS graded Uncirculated Detail (Cleaned)." Many auction catalogs call this coin a double louis d'or, because it is so large, but government documents make it clear that it was intended to be a single louis d'or. It was struck 1716-18 and was the heaviest louis d'or struck during the reign of Louis XV. It was replaced by the louis d'or à la croix du Saint Esprit, which was 9.79 grams. The 1718-A, though an expensive coin, is more available than any other louis d'or de Noailles of 1718.

Recorded mintage: 236,400 plus 963,600 of the louis d'or à la croix du Saint Esprit[2].

Specification: 12.23 g, 0.917 fine gold, 27-28 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.

Catalog reference: Dr/4 № 795, Dr/2 № 529, Fr-450; Gad-344; KM-428.1.
