Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 71342

This specimen was lot 71342 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $336. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Ecu, 1718-(9). Rennes Mint. Louis XV. NGC AU-55. With only a hint of light wear visible on the high points, this attractive piece from the Rennes mint in Brittany is sure to please, featuring a deep cabinet tone throughout. A fairly SCARCE piece." Shown here is an écu de France-Navarre of the Rennes mint, which closed in 1773. Droulers[2] notes the 1718-9 as fairly available but not as common as the type coin, 1718-A. The type was struck 1718-20 in substantial numbers but is not so common as the preceding écu vertugadin.

Recorded mintage: 1,771,557 plus 871,136 of the écu vertugadin[2].

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, .722 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
