Sincona sale 63, lot 812

This specimen was lot 812 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 2,400 CHF (about US$3,007 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Frankreich, konigreich, Louis XV. 1715-1774. Louis d'or à la croix de Malte 1718 BB, Strasbourg. Sehr selten. Sehr schön. (kingdom of France, Louis XV, 1715-74, gold louis of the Maltese cross of 1718, Strasbourg mint. Very rare, Very fine.)"

Droulers[2] notes this French type, called a louis d'or à la croix du Saint Esprit, was struck 1718-19 and replaced the louis d'or de Noailles, which was 12.23 grams.

Recorded mintage: 148,690, a common date[2].

Specification: 9.79 g, 0.917 fine gold, reeded edge, 22-23 mm diameter, this specimen 9.73 g.
