France 1719-A ecu

Heritage sale 3026, lot 24525

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This is an écu de France-Navarre of the Paris mint, struck while Louis XV was a minor. The first specimen was lot 24525 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), where it sold for $763.75. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Louis XV Ecu 1719-A, MS62 PCGS, deeply toned and original, adjustment marks on the bust. This type was struck for circulation in Navarre with the quartered arms of France and Navarre on the reverse." Droulers^[2] notes the 1719-A as fairly available but not as common as the type coin, 1718-A. The specimen shown is a "flan neuf." The type was struck 1718-20 in substantial numbers but is not so common as the preceding écu vertugadin.

Recorded mintage: 2,850,480^[2].

Specification: 24.47 g, 0.917 fine silver, .722 troy oz ASW, 38 mm diameter, edge lettered DOMINE SALVUM FAC REGEM, designed by Norbert Roëttiers.
