Sincona sale 85, lot 2193

This specimen was lot 2193 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,800 CHF (about US$2,424 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHINA, 10 Yuan 1994, Shanghai Mint. Panda. Bimetall: 1/10 Unze Gold, 1/28 Unze Silber, Polierte Platte. Nur 2'500 Exemplare geprägt, Im Originaletui mit Zertifikat, Bimetallic, 1/10 oz gold plus 1/28 oz silver. Only 2,500 pieces struck. Choice Proof. In original box with certificate."

The Chinese government has, since the mid 1980's, produced a mind boggling array of bullion related collectibles. Ten yuan commemoratives for 1994 include KM 522, 526, 527, 528, 612, KM 616, KM 623, 625, 642, KM 643, 651, 652, 654, 655, 656, 657, 662, 663, KM 671, 673, 675, 676, 686, 690, 691, 692, 693, 701, A623 and A625 (shown here). The panda was struck in bimetallic format on occasion but never became a regular series.
