Stack's Bowers 2023 NYINC sale, lot 41441

This specimen was lot 41441 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 16 Groschen, 1786-MC. Brunswick Mint. Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand. PCGS MS-63. Finest certified example at PCGS." This type was struck 1784-1805 along with an 8 gute groschen (KM 1026). We don't know its value in relation to the four, six, twelve and 24 mariengroschen struck at the same time. The coin is marked "XX EINE FEINE MARK CONVENTIONS", that is, half a thaler.

Recorded mintage: 6,282,780 for 1795-1805.

Specification: 14.03 g, 0.833 fine silver.
