This specimen was lot 73271 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 4 Mariengroschen, 1786-C. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand. PCGS AU-58. On the cusp of Mint State status, this wonderfully colored minor sports a melange of iridescence that forms a ring quite majestically upon each side. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1781-86 and is common. This denomination was originally one ninth thaler but sank to one twelfth thaler with the adoption of the convention thaler.
