Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1786-C 6 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74527 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1786-C. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand. PCGS MS-61. Presenting a mix of steely gray toning and some cobalt aspects, this example even offers a high degree of die polishing upon the reverse. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1785-88 for Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand and is the last of the denomination. Six mariengroschen made a quarter gulden, which was originally one sixth of a thaler but had slipped to one ninth thaler by this time. Mintmaster C appears 1786-89.
