Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1784-CES 6 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74636 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen, 1784-CES. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand. PCGS MS-62. Fully entrancing and provocative, this nearly-Choice specimen dazzles with a mirror sheen to the surfaces and a deep cabinet tone accentuated by gunmetal gray and hues of cobalt. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This denomination was one quarter of a gulden or one-sixth of a thaler. The denomination was struck with the wild man reverse. The leaping stallion reverse was used on the one-sixth thaler, a coin of the same value. This type is listed for 1781-84 and no date receives a premium.
