This specimen was part of lot 5555 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), which sold for €400 (about US$557 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-WOLFENBÜTTEL, FÜRSTENTUM, Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand, 1780-1806. 1/6 Taler 1780.... alle Münzstätte Braunschweig. 4 Stück., Vorzüglich und besser. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Westfälische Auktionsgesellschaft 2, Dortmund 1993, Nr. 2. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Charles William Ferdinand, 1780-1806, one sixth thaler of 1780, Brunswick mint. [One of] four pieces, extremely fine or better.)"
This denomination was introduced in 1693 and most types featured the leaping stallion of Hannover. Both Karl I and his successor Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand struck this denomination in 1780, resulting in two types for the year. This one, which was struck until 1804, is the more common. Note the reverse legend, "LXXX EINE FEINE MARK", i.e., the weight of one eighth of a thaler.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
