Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1780-CES 24 mariengroschen KM-870
This specimen was lot 73531 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1780-CES. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-55. An attractive example of this long-issued type with an eclectic and pleasing mix of gun-metal gray and pearl-gray surfaces, with lighter argent in protected areas. Struck from a somewhat worn obverse die paired with a crisp reverse die. Last year for the type. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 and is common. A 24 mariengroschen with a leaping stallion reverse (KM 895) was struck 1736-80 and is slightly more expensive. Twenty-four mariengroschen started out as two-thirds of a thaler but had slipped to half a thaler by the end of Karl's reign. Mintmaster CES appears 1780-85.
