Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1780-CES 6 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74521 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1780-CES. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS AU-58. This attractive example offers lovely cabinet toning and still-lustrous surfaces in the protected areas of the coin. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 for Karl I and is common. Six mariengroschen made a quarter gulden, which was originally one sixth of a thaler but had slipped to one ninth thaler by the end of the reign. Mintmaster CES appears 1780-85.
