Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel 1779-C 6 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 74520 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2023), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Brunswick. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1779-C. Zellerfeld Mint. Karl I. PCGS MS-61. Presenting an elegant level of toning, especially upon the wildman side, this minor offers enchanting appeal and allure. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1735-80 for Karl I and is common. Six mariengroschen made a quarter gulden, which was originally one sixth of a thaler but had slipped to one ninth thaler by the end of the reign. Mintmaster C appears 1779 only.
