Stephen Album sale 38, lot 3373
Germany SA38-3373r.jpg

This specimen was lot 3373 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $107.10. The catalog description[1] noted, "BRUNSWICK-CALENBERG-HANNOVER: George III, 1760-1820, AR 1/6 thaler, 1780, mintmaster IWS, very faint hairlines, lustrous lovely toned surfaces! Unc." This type was struck 1773, 1780, 1782 to the convention thaler standard (one thaler = 120 kreuzer). This example realized about one third of the catalog value. The SCWC also records a 1780-CES 1/6 thaler with a wildman on the obverse. Hannover, linked to the British crown 1714-1837, embroiled England in several continental conflicts the British establishment would rather have avoided.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-366, Welter-2832.
