Hannover 1759-IWS 1/6 thaler
This specimen was lot 73751 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2022), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Braunschweig-Calenberg-Hannover. 1/6 Taler, 1759-IWS. George II August. PCGS MS-62. An attractive piece that is less commonly seen, this example is striking with the image of St. Andrew carrying his cross that harkens to Russian issues more or less contemporaneous with these strikes. Iridescent rainbow toning clings to the devices and legends in a lightshow of gaudy proportions." This type was struck 1746, 1753 and 1756-59 and is somewhat available. Another one-sixth thaler, featuring a wild man reverse, was struck in 1759 (KM 180).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
Catalog reference: KM-298.
