Künker sale 354, lot 5717

This specimen was lot 5717 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €180 (about US$251 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg II. 1727-1760. 1/6 Taler (6 Mariengroschen) 1743, Zellerfeld. Vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 11, Osnabrück 1988, Nr. 1580. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George II, 1727-60, one sixth thaler of 1743, Zellerfeld mint. Extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1727-60 and, while not rare, is expensive in good condition. Several designs were used on this denomination during this reign but this is the only one struck in 1743. Six mariengroschen = 1/6 thaler. The elector George II was also king George II of England.
