Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73290

This specimen was lot 73290 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 2 Mariengroschen, 1743-IBH. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg II August (George II of Great Britain). PCGS MS-62. Some scattered subtle striking weakness is noted, but this example remains without any evidence of time in commerce and offers some delightful toning and remaining luster as well. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1730-60. Mintmaster IBH appears for 1739-60. Another two mariengroschen, KM 279, with a monogram obverse, was struck in 1743 and dated 1743-CPS. Two mariengroschen were one-eighteenth thaler.
