Stack's Bowers November 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73629

This specimen was lot 73629 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2023), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 6 Mariengroschen (1/6 Taler), 1781-CES. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS AU-58. This lustrous coin offers argent surfaces with small splashes of magenta gray toning. The Wild Man is somewhat softly rendered and there is some shadowing on the reverse opposite his figure. A pleasing and attractive piece. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1762-84 for George III along with KM 366 with a bust obverse, which is rather scarcer. It superseded KM 180, struck 1743-60 for George II. Mintmaster CES appears 1780-85.
