Hannover 1781-CES 24 mariengroschen
This specimen was lot 73293 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1781-CES. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS AU-58. On the cusp of Mint State status, this enticing example yields an enchanting pastel iridescence atop a charming gunmetal gray nature. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1762-84. We also note KM 341, with an arms obverse/value reverse, dated 1781-IWS, and KM 365, bust obverse, also dated 1781-IWS. Mintmaster CES is listed for 1780-85. It was during this period that this coin slipped from two-thirds thaler to half a thaler in value.
