Künker sale 354, lot 5730

This specimen was lot 5730 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €170 (about US$237 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRAUNSCHWEIG UND LÜNEBURG, BRAUNSCHWEIG-LÜNEBURG, FÜRSTENTUM, Georg III. 1760-1820. 1/3 Taler 1781, Clausthal. Ausbeute der Grube St. Andreas. R Vorzüglich. Aus der Sammlung eines Ingenieurs. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 64, Osnabrück 2001, Nr. 4790. (Germany, duchy of Brunswick-Luneburg-Calenberg-Hannover, George III, 1760-1820, one third thaler of 1781, Clausthal mint, for the St. Andrew mine. Rare, extremely fine.)"

This denomination was struck in many types. Some have the king's bust (KM 368, 373, 388, 391, 417), some have the wild man of the forest (KM 255, 349, 387), some have St. Andrew holding his cross (KM 240, 273, 274, 326, 356, 374, 421) and a few have the leaping stallio of Hannover (KM 247, 323, 358). The one shown here was struck for George III 1779-84, 1788-90 and 1793.
