SB223-73292r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73292 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Brunswick-Luneburg: Hannover. 24 Mariengroschen (2/3 Taler), 1777-LCR. Zellerfeld Mint. Georg III (George III of Great Britain). PCGS AU-53. With some cobalt hues highlighting the devices on the wildman side and a more burnished amber and cerise nature upon the coat-of-arms side, this elegant, near-Mint minor certainly offers a pleasing appearance. From the Robert C. Knepper Collection." This type was struck 1762-84. We also note KM 341, with an arms obverse/value reverse, dated 1777-IWS, and KM 365, bust obverse, also dated 1777-IWS. Mintmaster LCR is listed for 1774-78. It was during this period that this coin slipped from two-thirds thaler to half a thaler in value.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-347; Welter-2812.
