Hannover 1778-IWS 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 5223 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €950 (about US$1,228 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRAUNSCHWEIG-CALENBERG-HANNOVER, AB 1692 KURFÜRSTENTUM HANNOVER, Georg III. 1760-1820. 2/3 Taler 1778 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1776 geändert), Clausthal. . R Feine Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (electorate of Hannover, George III, 1760-1820, two-thirds thaler of 1778, Clausthal mint, 1778/6 overdate. Rare, fine patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
The gulden with the bust obverse was struck 1776, 1778, 1781 and is somewhat scarce. A closely related type (KM 365, not struck in 1778) shows the arms on the reverse without supporters. Other gulden struck in 1778 include KM 341 (value reverse) and KM 347 (wild man reverse) but are catalogued as 24 mariengroschen.
